MISSISSIPPI — Several school districts across Mississippi announced early dismissals for students on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, as a severe weather threat moves into the region.
According to district officials, the schedule changes are being made out of caution due to the potential for dangerous storms later in the day. Forecasters have warned that conditions could support severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall.
Among the districts adjusting schedules, the Canton Public School District announced that elementary schools will dismiss at 2:15 p.m., while middle and high schools will dismiss at 2:30 p.m. Jones County School District also announced an early dismissal at 1:00 p.m.
In the Laurel School District, dismissal times vary by campus, with some schools releasing students as early as noon. Yazoo County School District also announced a district-wide dismissal at 12:00 p.m.
School officials say the early dismissals are intended to ensure students and staff can travel home safely before the most severe weather is expected to arrive. Potential hazards include downed trees, power outages, and hazardous road conditions due to heavy rain.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to stay in contact with their local school districts for updates and to make necessary arrangements for early pick-up.
The severe weather threat is expected to increase through the afternoon and evening hours, and residents are urged to remain weather-aware and prepared to take action if warnings are issued.
