OHIO — A Stark County man wanted in connection with a deadly April shooting in Canton has been arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service.

33-year-old Ashaad Carlisle was taken into custody Wednesday morning in the 700 block of Greenfield Avenue in Canton without incident. Carlisle had been wanted by Canton police in connection with the April shooting death of Richard Staats.

Carlisle is facing charges of aggravated murder and discharge of a firearm near prohibited premises, according to Canton Police Lt. Dennis Garren.

Authorities said the shooting happened around 4:23 a.m. on April 19 at a residence in the 3100 block of Tuscarawas Street West. Officers responded after receiving reports of shots fired in the area from Aultman Security. While officers were en route, dispatchers received another call reporting a shooting victim inside the residence.

Police said responding officers entered the apartment and found Staats between a bed and a wall suffering from a gunshot wound to the front of his head. Officers provided medical aid and requested EMS assistance. A witness inside the residence told police she had called 911.

Investigators said officers located a pellet gun and Staats’ cell phone inside the apartment while processing the scene.

Staats was later taken off life support on April 21 and died from his injuries, according to Canton police.

Following the issuance of an arrest warrant, the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force began searching for Carlisle in the Canton area. Earlier this week, Carlisle had been featured as the task force’s Fugitive of the Week.

“Detectives with the Canton Police Department and members of our task force worked quickly to identify this suspect and get him into custody,” U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott said in a statement. “The tips received from community members after the suspect was featured as Fugitive of the Week on Monday were invaluable to getting this fugitive off the streets.”
