FLORIDA — Two students were arrested Thursday after firearms were found during separate incidents at Seminole County high schools, according to school officials.
Seminole County Public Schools said lockdowns were initiated at both Seminole High School and Lyman High School after administrators received tips about possible weapons on campus.
At Seminole High School, officials said administrators at the Ninth Grade Center received a report about a student possibly carrying a weapon. Deputies and investigators responded and recovered a gun from the student’s bag before taking the student into custody.
School officials said the campus was later cleared and classes resumed. An increased law enforcement presence, including weapon-detection K9 units, is expected on campus Friday.
At Lyman High School, administrators also received a tip about a student with a weapon. Authorities said the student was searched, a firearm was found and the student was arrested.
School district officials praised those who reported the tips and credited law enforcement officers for responding quickly.
Seminole County Public Schools Superintendent Serita D. Beamon called the incidents dangerous and unacceptable, urging parents to secure firearms and monitor what students bring to school.
Authorities have not released the identities of the students or announced possible charges.
