ILLINOIS — Interstate 290 is currently closed in both directions in Chicago’s west suburbs as authorities investigate an incident involving an SUV and a bomb squad response.
According to officials, the closure affects the Eisenhower Expressway between 25th Avenue and Wolf Road in Hillside. The investigation began around 10 a.m. Thursday and remains ongoing.
Traffic cameras and aerial footage showed an SUV stopped in a middle lane of the expressway with its windows blown out. A bomb squad unit from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office responded to examine the vehicle, while agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were also called to the scene.
Authorities have not released details about what led to the investigation.
The closure has caused major traffic backups, with some motorists reportedly leaving their vehicles during the lengthy shutdown. Drivers are being urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes, including Roosevelt Road, 21st Street and Cermak Avenue.
No injuries have been reported. Officials have not announced when I-290 will reopen as the investigation continues.
