NORTH CAROLINA — A woman was killed in a crash Friday morning along Springs Road north of Hickory, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the crash happened around 8:30 a.m. when the woman was driving on Springs Road and, for reasons still under investigation, left the roadway.
Authorities said the vehicle struck a sign and then collided with a parked car at an auto repair shop.
Witnesses told investigators the driver did not appear to be speeding before the crash occurred.
Emergency crews responded to the scene, and the woman was pronounced dead. Her identity has not yet been released pending notification of family members.
One lane of Springs Road was closed for more than an hour while troopers investigated the crash and cleared the scene.
Officials have not said whether any other vehicles were involved. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
