OHIO — A 20-year-old Lorain man was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated after police said he drove the wrong way on Interstate 90 in Westlake early Monday morning.

According to the Westlake Police Department, officers received several calls just after midnight reporting a black Hyundai SUV traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-90 near Columbia Road.

Police began searching for the vehicle and later found the SUV disabled and facing the wrong direction near Cahoon Road after it struck a guardrail.

Authorities said the driver was not injured and no other vehicles were involved in the incident.

Investigators said the driver told officers he did not realize he was driving on the wrong side of the interstate, despite other drivers flashing their headlights at him. Police said he believed he entered the highway near McKinley Road, about six miles from where the vehicle was found.

Officers said the driver appeared intoxicated but refused field sobriety tests and a breath test. Police also found an open bottle of Lunazul tequila inside the SUV.

The man was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, driving the wrong way on an interstate, failure to control and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.
