VIRGINIA — A juvenile passenger was killed and two other juveniles were seriously injured after a car crashed into a tree following a police pursuit late Tuesday night in Hopewell, according to authorities.

The crash happened around 11:53 p.m. May 19 after Hopewell Telecommunications received reports of a large group of juveniles arguing in the roadway near the 100 block of South 8th Avenue.

According to Hopewell police, an officer arriving in the area observed a black Nissan being driven recklessly and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

Police said the driver sped away westbound on City Point Road toward Mesa Drive, where the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.

Officers immediately rendered aid to the three juveniles inside the vehicle.

Authorities said the driver and one passenger suffered serious injuries and were taken to regional hospitals for treatment.

A third passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released the identity of the juvenile who died pending notification of family members.

The Hopewell Police Department is continuing to investigate the crash and is asking anyone with information to contact the Hopewell Criminal Investigations Unit or Hopewell-Prince George Crime Solvers.
