GEORGIA — A month-long narcotics investigation led to the seizure of more than 25 pounds of suspected fentanyl and the arrest of a suspected drug trafficker during a traffic stop in Cobb County, authorities said.
According to the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, agents with the Marietta/Cobb/Smyrna Narcotics Unit stopped a vehicle on June 8 as part of an ongoing investigation. During the stop, a K-9 officer alerted to the vehicle, prompting a search.
Investigators said the search uncovered approximately 11.43 kilograms, or more than 25 pounds, of suspected fentanyl. Authorities also recovered a firearm from the vehicle.
The suspect, identified as Akira Garcia Mondragon, was arrested and charged with trafficking fentanyl and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Officials said the seized synthetic opioids field-tested positive for fentanyl and have an estimated street value of approximately $1.65 million.
Sheriff Craig Owens described the seizure as a significant victory in the fight against illegal drugs, noting that even a small amount of fentanyl can be deadly.
The operation involved undercover and uniformed narcotics agents, Organized Crime Unit intelligence personnel and K-9 teams. The Marietta/Cobb/Smyrna Narcotics Unit is a regional task force that includes eight local law enforcement agencies and the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office.
Authorities have not disclosed where the fentanyl originated or its intended destination. Investigators also have not said whether additional arrests are expected.
The investigation remains ongoing.
