OHIO — Most schools across Ohio will be closed Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day, the federal holiday honoring U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the armed forces.
Public school districts throughout the state traditionally close for the holiday each year, and many schools are already scheduled to be on summer break by late May. Districts that remain in session are expected to suspend classes for the day.
Memorial Day is observed annually on the last Monday of May and is recognized as a federal holiday nationwide. Government offices, banks and many businesses also close or operate on limited schedules for the holiday.
In addition to school closures, many communities across Ohio are expected to hold Memorial Day ceremonies, parades and other events honoring fallen service members. Travel is also expected to increase over the holiday weekend as families gather and residents take advantage of the long weekend.
Classes are expected to resume Tuesday, May 26, for districts that remain in session following the holiday.
