ILLINOIS — Most schools across Illinois will be closed Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day, the federal holiday honoring members of the U.S. military who died while serving the country.
Public school districts throughout Illinois traditionally cancel classes for the holiday each year, while many schools are already nearing the end of the academic year or beginning summer break. Districts still holding classes are expected to suspend instruction for the day.
Memorial Day is observed annually on the last Monday in May and is recognized nationwide as a federal holiday. Along with school closures, government offices, banks and many businesses are also expected to close or operate on reduced schedules.
Communities across Illinois are expected to host Memorial Day ceremonies, parades and tributes honoring fallen service members throughout the holiday weekend. Increased travel is also anticipated as residents take advantage of the three-day weekend.
Classes are expected to resume Tuesday, May 26, for Illinois school districts that remain in session after the holiday.
