Most schools in Alabama to close next week

ALABAMA — Many schools across Alabama are expected to close next week as voters head to the polls for the state’s 2026 primary election.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, Alabama’s primary election is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, 2026, with runoff elections set for June 16. The election will determine which candidates advance to the Nov. 3 general election ballot for statewide, legislative and congressional races.

Because many schools throughout Alabama are used as polling locations, numerous districts traditionally cancel classes or shift students to remote learning on Election Day to reduce traffic and address security concerns while voters are on campus.

School systems across the state have already begun notifying parents and staff about planned closures for May 19. District leaders say the closures help ensure safe access for both students and voters during the election process.

Local officials encourage residents to check with their individual school districts for specific schedules and any updates regarding extracurricular activities, after-school programs or remote learning plans connected to Election Day closures.

Election officials also remind voters to verify polling locations and voting hours ahead of next week’s primary.
