GEORGIA — Many schools across Georgia are expected to close next week as voters head to the polls for the state’s 2026 primary election on Tuesday, May 19.
Georgia’s primary election will determine which candidates advance to the Nov. 3 general election ballot in races for governor, Congress, the Georgia General Assembly and other statewide and local offices. Runoff elections, if needed, are scheduled for June 16.
Because many schools in Georgia serve as polling places, numerous districts traditionally cancel classes on Election Day or move students to remote learning. School officials say the closures help reduce campus traffic and improve security while voters are entering and exiting school buildings throughout the day.
Several Georgia counties have already announced schedule changes ahead of the May 19 election, and parents are being encouraged to check with their local school systems for details regarding closures, remote instruction and extracurricular activities.
Early voting for the primary election began April 27 and continues through May 15. Georgia voters will cast ballots in a wide range of races, including statewide contests and local offices such as school board and county commission seats.
