OHIO — A 25-year-old man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after leading police on a pursuit and crashing into another vehicle, according to the Elyria Police Department.

Police said Denavin Whitman, of Amherst, had outstanding felony warrants for burglary and domestic violence at the time of his arrest.

Officers first attempted to make contact with Whitman around 3:15 p.m. in the parking lot of Sycamore Suites, located at 621 Midway Boulevard. Authorities said Whitman fled the scene in a 2011 Hyundai Sonata and nearly struck an officer as he drove away.

Police initiated a pursuit, during which Whitman reportedly drove recklessly, creating a danger to the public. The chase ended at the intersection of Murray Ridge Road and Lowell Street when Whitman failed to stop and struck another vehicle.

Whitman was taken into custody and transported to University Hospitals for treatment. Police said no officers or motorists were injured in the incident.

Elyria Police Chief James Welsh said Whitman’s driver’s license had already been suspended prior to the incident due to a previous violation involving failure to comply with and fleeing from a police officer.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is handling the investigation into the crash.
