
OHIO — A gas explosion at a home in Girard prompted evacuations and sent two first responders to the hospital Wednesday morning, according to authorities.
Emergency crews were called to the 1000 block of North State Street for a reported gas leak when the explosion occurred. The blast injured a police officer and a firefighter, both of whom were taken to a hospital as a precaution.
Officials said homes and businesses within two-tenths of a mile of the scene were evacuated as a safety measure.
Smoke was visible in the area following the explosion. Utility crews from Ohio Edison and Enbridge responded to assist at the scene.
Authorities said the home involved is currently unsafe to enter. Crews remained on site late Wednesday morning as the situation continued to be assessed.
The incident remains under investigation, and additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
