Two people arrested following large drug bust in North Carolina

NORTH CAROLINA — A traffic stop in Yancey County last month led to the arrest of two people on a combined 36 drug charges, according to the Yancey County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said deputies conducted the traffic stop April 4 on the western end of the county. During the investigation, authorities seized approximately 28 grams of methamphetamine and 158 grams of methadone.

Officials said the amount of drugs recovered resulted in Level III trafficking charges.

Authorities arrested 48-year-old Edward Allen Byrd and 37-year-old Lacy Yvonne Burleson, both of Bakersville.

According to the sheriff’s office, both defendants were charged with multiple offenses, including trafficking methamphetamine, trafficking opium or heroin, possession of methamphetamine, possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver controlled substances, conspiracy charges related to trafficking and selling narcotics, maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for controlled substances, and several misdemeanor drug possession and paraphernalia charges.

Byrd is being held under a $1.35 million secured bond, while Burleson is being held under a $1.3 million secured bond.
