NORTH CAROLINA — A Union County woman and her boyfriend are facing criminal charges after a 15-month-old child was hospitalized following exposure to methamphetamine, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a medical call involving the child on Wednesday morning. The toddler was taken to a hospital for evaluation after experiencing a medical emergency. Hospital staff later determined the child had methamphetamine in her system, which contributed to the medical issues, investigators said.

Authorities identified the child’s mother as Bailey Smith. Investigators allege that Smith and her boyfriend, James Kisiah, exposed the child to the drug.

Smith was taken into custody and charged with negligent child abuse inflicting serious physical injury. She was given a $250,000 bond.

Kisiah was also charged in connection with the case. Officials said he had outstanding warrants and was later located in Lancaster County, South Carolina. He is currently awaiting extradition to North Carolina.

The investigation remains ongoing.
