MARYLAND — Authorities are investigating a police pursuit that ended in a fatal multi-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon.
According to officials, officers observed what they believed to be a drug transaction on Meadwood Drive on June 9 and later determined the vehicle involved had multiple violations.
When officers attempted to stop the vehicle near Long Bar Harbor, the driver refused to pull over, prompting a pursuit.
Police said the vehicle traveled eastbound on Route 40 and continued through the intersection at Bata Boulevard. The pursuit ended at the intersection of Route 40 and Route 543 when the suspect’s vehicle collided with four other vehicles.
Following the crash, the suspect’s vehicle caught fire. Authorities said the driver became trapped inside the vehicle and died at the scene.
Officials reported that the entire pursuit lasted approximately 96 seconds.
Two other individuals were transported to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Authorities said the suspect was the only person killed in the incident.
Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler said investigators believe they know the identity of the suspect but are not releasing the name at this time. The suspect was identified only as an adult.
The Maryland Office of the Attorney General said its Independent Investigations Division responded to the scene and is investigating the incident.
