Severe thunderstorms possible in Indiana on Tuesday

INDIANA — Parts of northern Indiana could see strong to severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and evening as a cold front moves across the Midwest, according to the latest forecast from the Storm Prediction Center.

Forecasters have placed northern Indiana under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather, meaning isolated severe storms are possible. The threat is expected to develop during the afternoon and continue into the evening hours.

SPC Day 2 Outlook

Meteorologists say moisture returning northward ahead of an approaching cold front will help fuel thunderstorm development. While some storms that form earlier in the day are expected to remain below severe limits, a few could produce isolated damaging wind gusts.

The greater severe weather potential is expected to develop along the cold front later in the afternoon. Forecast conditions may support strong to severe thunderstorms capable of producing large hail, damaging winds and a possible tornado, especially across northern Indiana.

The Storm Prediction Center noted that if forecast instability increases, northern Indiana could be upgraded to a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) in future outlooks. Southern Michigan and northwest Ohio are also being monitored for a possible increase in the threat level.

Residents are encouraged to stay weather aware Tuesday and monitor updated forecasts as the severe weather threat evolves.
