MISSISSIPPI — A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 6 p.m. Saturday for much of central, southwest and western Mississippi as strong storms move across the region, according to the National Weather Service.

The Storm Prediction Center issued Severe Thunderstorm Watch 241 at 10:15 a.m. CDT, warning that conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail and frequent lightning.

The watch includes the following Mississippi counties: Adams, Amite, Attala, Claiborne, Copiah, Covington, Franklin, Hinds, Holmes, Humphreys, Issaquena, Jefferson, Jefferson Davis, Lawrence, Leake, Lincoln, Madison, Marion, Pike, Rankin, Scott, Sharkey, Simpson, Smith, Walthall, Warren, Washington, Wilkinson and Yazoo.

Major cities included in the watch area include Jackson, Natchez, Brookhaven, McComb, Vicksburg, Greenwood and Canton.

Forecasters said residents in the affected areas should remain alert for rapidly changing weather conditions throughout the afternoon and evening. Severe thunderstorms may produce damaging wind gusts capable of downing trees and power lines, along with torrential rainfall and dangerous lightning.

The National Weather Service urges residents to monitor local forecasts and be prepared to seek shelter if Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are issued.
