TENNESSEE — A crash involving commercial vehicles has closed Interstate 40 East in Roane County and is causing miles-long traffic backups Thursday morning.

According to Mark Nagi with the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the crash occurred around 7:30 a.m. on I-40 East.

All eastbound lanes are currently closed as crews respond to the scene and work to clear the roadway. The closure has resulted in significant traffic congestion and lengthy delays for motorists traveling through the area.

Officials said the interstate is expected to remain closed until approximately 10 a.m., though that timeframe could change as cleanup and investigation efforts continue.

There was no immediate word on injuries.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible and seek alternate routes. The crash remains under investigation.
