VIRGINIA — More than 150 farm animals were seized following a search warrant executed in Shenandoah County after authorities received reports of animals living in poor conditions.
According to the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office, the Animal Control Division was alerted on April 23, 2026, to the situation involving over 100 animals, including horses, cattle, and donkeys, at a property in the Mount Jackson area.
Deputies executed a search warrant and discovered a large number of animals in extremely poor condition. Many appeared malnourished, while others showed visible signs of illness. Investigators also found animal remains at multiple locations across the property.
Officials said the operation required four teams of Virginia veterinarians to assess the animals. The property was deemed to have inadequate living conditions, including insufficient food.
Authorities seized a total of 152 animals, including 84 horses, 66 cattle, and two donkeys.
The search warrant was carried out over a three-day period from April 23 through April 25, involving more than 60 law enforcement personnel and volunteers who worked to process the scene.
The investigation remains ongoing. The sheriff’s office said it is working with animal rescue organizations, the Virginia Department of Agriculture, veterinarians, and volunteers.
The Virginia Attorney General’s Office Animal Law Unit has agreed to direct the prosecution of the case. Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Sabattis is leading the investigation.
More information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.
