FLORIDA — A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office investigation led to the arrest of a southwest Miami-Dade woman after authorities said her 6-year-old son accidentally shot himself with her firearm Tuesday afternoon.
Deputies said the shooting was reported around 3:53 p.m. near Southwest 102nd Avenue and West Circle Plaza in the unincorporated West Perrine area of Miami-Dade County.
According to investigators, 33-year-old Myeisha Sharie Smith heard a loud popping sound inside the residence and discovered her son suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to his upper body.
Authorities said Smith drove the child to Jackson South Medical Center before he was airlifted to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital for further treatment.
The child was reported to be in stable condition Wednesday morning.
According to an arrest report, Smith told detectives she left her gun unattended in her bedroom while her son was in the room. Investigators said the boy picked up the firearm and accidentally shot himself in the shoulder above the clavicle.
Smith was arrested on a charge of child neglect causing great bodily harm. Jail records show she was being held Wednesday at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center pending a court appearance.
