One person injured following random stabbing incident in Florida

FLORIDA — A Hialeah man has been arrested and charged after police say he carried out a random stabbing attack with a kitchen knife, leaving the victim with life-threatening injuries.

According to authorities, Karel Diaz Gonzalez, 46, was taken into custody Sunday and charged with second-degree attempted murder with a deadly weapon.

Police said officers responded to a report of a stabbing near West 2nd Avenue, where they found the victim on the floor while family members attempted to stop the bleeding from wounds to his head and body. The victim told officers he did not know his attacker and described the incident as random.

The victim was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he underwent surgery for a stab wound to the lower back portion of his head. His injuries were described as life-threatening.

Investigators said a trail of blood at the scene led officers to evidence, including a knife blade cover found in a nearby yard and blood outside an apartment. When officers knocked on the apartment door, Diaz Gonzalez answered and reportedly had blood on his ear. He told officers he had been attacked first, according to the arrest report.

Surveillance footage later showed Diaz Gonzalez speaking with the victim before going back into his apartment and returning with a large kitchen knife. Police said he approached the victim in a “ready position” and ran toward him as the victim attempted to flee.

A knife was later recovered from underneath a parked vehicle nearby.

Diaz Gonzalez was booked into jail and later appeared before a judge, who appointed him a public defender and ordered him held without bond.

The investigation remains ongoing.
