TENNESSEE — A Knoxville woman has been charged after police said a man was fatally shot during what investigators described as an unintentional shooting Thursday night.

According to the Knoxville Police Department, officers responded around 10:15 p.m. to a home in the 700 block of Belleaire Avenue following reports of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Police said 29-year-old Katelyn Meadows was detained at the scene and later charged with reckless homicide and reckless endangerment.

Investigators said Meadows and the victim had reportedly been consuming alcohol and marijuana while handling two firearms on the front porch of the home. During that time, Meadows allegedly unintentionally fired a round that struck the victim, according to police.

Authorities said Meadows called 911 after the shooting.

She was booked into the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility around 6:30 a.m. Friday.

The investigation by the Knoxville Police Department’s Homicide Unit remains ongoing.
