One person dead following vehicle crash on I-40 in North Carolina

NORTH CAROLINA — A driver was killed in a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning on Interstate 40 in Duplin County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers responded to the crash around 6:40 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-40. Investigators said the driver fell asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to travel into the median. The driver then overcorrected, sending the vehicle off the roadway where it struck a tree.

Authorities said the driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Duplin County EMS and the Warsaw Fire Department also responded to the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
