NORTH CAROLINA — A Taylorsville man died Thursday afternoon after his vehicle left the roadway and struck a mailbox and a tree, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported around 2:12 p.m. on Rink Dam Road near Wittenburg Springs Drive.
Troopers said Peter Joseph Gardner, 66, was driving east on Rink Dam Road when his vehicle drifted off the right side of the road. The vehicle then struck a mailbox and a tree.
Gardner was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
Investigators reported that speed and impairment are not believed to be contributing factors in the crash. Witnesses told troopers that Gardner may have experienced a medical episode prior to the incident.
The crash remains under investigation.
