MARYLAND — A 62-year-old man was killed after a fuel tanker overturned on Interstate 70 early Tuesday morning in Frederick County, according to Maryland State Police.
Troopers said the single-vehicle crash happened around 1:45 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-70 near mile marker 61 near the Route 75 exit in New Market.
Investigators said the tractor-trailer was hauling about 7,700 gallons of diesel fuel when it left the roadway and overturned, causing a major fuel spill.
Emergency crews pulled the driver from the wreckage, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Westbound lanes of I-70 were shut down for several hours while hazardous materials crews worked to contain and clean up the diesel spill.
Authorities said all lanes reopened by about 8:30 a.m.
Police have not yet released the identity of the driver. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
