NORTH CAROLINA — One man was killed and another seriously injured after a UTV crash Tuesday evening in Sampson County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the crash happened just before 6:30 p.m. along Old U.S. 421 in the Newton Grove area.
Investigators said the back driver’s side tire came off the UTV, causing the vehicle to skid, run off the roadway and overturn.
Both occupants, identified as 26-year-old Zachry Woodcock and 55-year-old Mark West, were thrown from the vehicle.
Woodcock, who was driving, died at the scene. West was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with serious injuries. His current condition has not been released.
Authorities said speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, though impairment is not suspected based on the initial investigation.
Troopers also noted that neither man was wearing a seatbelt.
The crash remains under investigation.
