INDIANA — One person was killed Friday after a passenger car and a semi-truck carrying anhydrous ammonia were involved in a head-on crash in Tippecanoe County, according to the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded around 12:30 p.m. to the 9900 block of U.S. 231 on reports of an injury crash.
Investigators determined a passenger car traveling southbound crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a northbound semi-truck. Authorities said it remains unclear what caused the vehicle to cross into the opposing lane.
The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the victim has not yet been released as the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office works to positively identify the driver.
The semi driver was wearing a seat belt and declined medical treatment at the scene, according to investigators.
Officials said the semi was transporting anhydrous ammonia, but no hazardous material was released during the crash.
The Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office said alcohol or drugs are suspected factors in the crash, although toxicology testing will be conducted as part of the investigation.
The crash closed U.S. 231 between County Road 800 South and State Road 28 in Romney for more than five hours while crews investigated and cleared the scene.
The investigation remains ongoing.
