FLORIDA — A man drowned Thursday evening near Beach Access 51 in Panama City Beach after becoming separated from a boogie board he was using, according to city officials.

Officials said the incident happened just after 6 p.m. Another man entered the water in an attempt to help but also required rescue. Authorities said that man was rescued safely.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

City officials said the drowning was the first reported drowning of 2026 in Panama City Beach.

Officials are reminding beachgoers to pay close attention to the beach flag warning system. Red flags indicate dangerous water conditions and should be taken seriously.
