
MISSISSIPPI — One person was killed during the Memorial Day holiday travel period in Mississippi, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
The holiday enforcement period began at 6 p.m. Friday, May 22, and ended at midnight Monday, May 25.
According to the highway patrol, the fatal crash happened around 9 a.m. Sunday, May 24, on Highway 6 in Monroe County.
Investigators said a 1997 Ford F-250 driven by 25-year-old Andrew Pettigo, of Baldwyn, was traveling east on Highway 6 when the truck left the roadway and struck a tree. Pettigo suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
During the 2026 Memorial Day travel period, MHP issued 4,908 citations statewide. Troopers also made 74 impaired driving arrests and cited 551 motorists for occupant restraint violations.
Authorities said troopers investigated 190 crashes that resulted in 39 injuries.
