ALABAMA — A woman was killed Wednesday morning after being struck by a freight train in southwest Birmingham, according to authorities.

The incident occurred around 8:23 a.m. on May 6 along railroad tracks near 40th Street Southwest, close to Bessemer Avenue and Jefferson Avenue.

Officials said the southbound freight train struck the woman while she was walking along the tracks. Her body was later found approximately 100 yards from the area where investigators believe the impact occurred.

Birmingham police, Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, and the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene.

Authorities said the train resumed movement around 11 a.m. after crews completed their initial response and removed the victim from the tracks.
