ILLINOIS — A 21-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal shooting in Champaign over the weekend, according to police.

The Champaign Police Department said Charles Haynes was taken into custody during the investigation into the shooting that left 33-year-old Aaron Sibley dead.

Officers responded Friday to the 500 block of East Columbia Avenue for a report of a shooting. When they arrived, they found Sibley in an alley suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

Sibley was transported to Carle Hospital, where he died in the emergency department approximately 30 minutes after officers were dispatched.

Authorities said Haynes was initially arrested on weapons-related charges. Following further investigation, the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office filed four counts of first-degree murder against him on Monday.

Court records show Haynes appeared in court the same day for arraignment. He waived a preliminary hearing and entered a plea of not guilty. A decision regarding pretrial detention was continued to Tuesday.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing and that officers are continuing to pursue leads. Authorities are asking anyone with information, including surveillance video, to contact the Champaign Police Department at 217-351-4545.
