NORTH CAROLINA — A Brunswick County man is facing multiple drug trafficking charges after deputies said controlled substances were discovered during the jail intake process following a traffic stop in Columbus County.

According to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, deputies with the Special Operations Division Vice/Narcotics Unit were conducting patrol and surveillance operations May 18 in areas known for elevated narcotics activity and recurring drug complaints.

Investigators said deputies stopped a vehicle driven by 48-year-old Lindsey Miguel Hawkins and took him into custody without incident on an outstanding habitual felon warrant.

During the investigation and intake process at the detention center, deputies said they discovered multiple controlled substances concealed on Hawkins.

Hawkins was transported to the Columbus County Law Enforcement Center and charged with two counts of trafficking in opium/heroin, possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver cocaine, methamphetamine and several controlled substances, maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for controlled substances, possession of a controlled substance in a jail or prison facility and drug paraphernalia offenses.

The sheriff’s office said Hawkins was held without bond and given a court date.
