LOUISIANA — A New Orleans man is facing multiple drug and firearm charges after a traffic stop in New Orleans East led to the discovery of suspected narcotics, firearms and explosive materials, according to Louisiana State Police.

State police said James Thomas, 41, was stopped on Lincoln Beach Boulevard near Lamb Road after troopers observed a vehicle displaying an expired registration sticker.

During the investigation, troopers conducted a search of Thomas and his vehicle. Authorities said they recovered a firearm and $849 in cash from Thomas. Troopers also found six half-sticks of suspected dynamite, suspected fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, dextroamphetamine pills, amphetamine pills, morphine pills and items commonly associated with narcotics distribution.

Because suspected explosive materials were located in the vehicle, the Louisiana State Police Criminal Investigations Unit and Emergency Services Unit responded to assist. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Federal Bureau of Investigation also participated in the investigation.

Investigators later executed a search warrant at Thomas’ residence. Authorities said they found eight firearms, including two that were confirmed stolen, two firearm suppressors and $900 in cash. Troopers also recovered suspected white-powder fentanyl, a blender containing suspected fentanyl residue and additional packaging materials commonly associated with drug distribution.

Thomas was charged with illegal possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance, illegal possession of Schedule II narcotics including fentanyl, methamphetamine, dextroamphetamine, amphetamine and morphine, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, and transactions involving proceeds from drug activity.

State police said the investigation remains active and additional charges are possible.
