ALABAMA — A Sheffield man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he disrupted a law enforcement operation and resisted arrest during a search warrant execution Wednesday evening.

According to the Lauderdale County Drug Task Force, investigators were executing a search warrant on North Locust Street with assistance from the Florence-Lauderdale SWAT Team and the Florence Police Department K-9 Unit.

Officials said 46-year-old David Culliver, of Sheffield, arrived at the scene but was not connected to the investigation and inserted himself into the situation.

Authorities said Culliver became belligerent, yelled at officers and stepped into an active roadway despite repeated warnings to move. He allegedly re-entered the roadway and continued disrupting traffic.

When officers attempted to arrest him, officials said Culliver pulled away and resisted efforts to handcuff him.

A police K-9 was deployed to assist, and during the struggle, authorities said Culliver grabbed one of the dog’s legs and bit the animal. Officers struck Culliver to make him release the K-9 before taking him into custody.

Culliver was taken to North Alabama Medical Center for treatment of injuries related to the encounter before being booked into the Lauderdale County Detention Center.

He is charged with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, public intoxication and interfering with a police dog. Authorities said he remains jailed on a $2,500 bond.

The task force said body camera footage will be released to provide additional context.
