FLORIDA — Authorities in Central Florida are investigating after two dogs were found abandoned inside a home in Sorrento, including one that was dead and another that survived.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 6:45 p.m. on May 19 to a residence on Grassy Sprain Avenue after receiving reports about dogs left unattended inside the house.
When deputies entered the home, they discovered what officials described as deplorable living conditions. Investigators said the house contained large amounts of animal waste on the floors and heavy cobweb buildup throughout the structure.
Inside one of the bedrooms, deputies found a surviving dog sitting next to the remains of another dog that had died, according to authorities.
The surviving animal was rescued and transported to a local shelter for medical evaluation and treatment. The deceased dog’s remains were collected and will undergo a forensic examination to determine the cause of death.
Investigators have not said how long the animals may have been left alone or what happened to the dogs’ owners. The breed and ages of the dogs also have not been released.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains active and criminal charges could be filed as the case develops.
