Multiple schools in Pennsylvania could close this week

PENNSYLVANIA — A freeze warning is in effect across parts of western and central Pennsylvania overnight into Monday morning, bringing concerns about icy roads, possible light snow and the potential for school delays or closures on April 20.

The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh said sub-freezing temperatures as low as 28 degrees are expected between 2 a.m. and 10 a.m. Monday across areas including Mercer, Venango, Forest, Lawrence, Butler, Clarion, Armstrong and Beaver counties, along with higher elevations in Westmoreland, Fayette and Indiana counties.

Additional warnings issued by the National Weather Service in State College cover central Pennsylvania counties such as Blair, Cambria, Somerset, Centre, Clinton and Lycoming, where temperatures are also expected to fall below freezing overnight.

Forecasters warn that any moisture left on roadways from recent precipitation could freeze as temperatures drop, leading to slick and potentially hazardous travel conditions early Monday. Bridges, overpasses and rural roads are expected to be the most impacted.

Some areas could also see isolated light snow showers overnight into early Monday, particularly across higher elevations. While little to no accumulation is expected, even brief snow could reduce visibility and contribute to slippery conditions.

The combination of freezing temperatures and possible icy roadways may prompt some school districts to consider delays or closures Monday morning, especially in rural or higher-elevation areas where road treatment may be limited.

In addition to travel concerns, officials warn that the freeze could damage crops, vegetation and exposed outdoor plumbing.

A freeze watch remains in effect for Monday night into Tuesday morning, with even colder temperatures possible, meaning additional impacts could follow early in the week.

Residents are urged to allow extra travel time Monday morning and take precautions to protect plants and outdoor pipes.
