Multiple schools in Michigan could close this week

MICHIGAN — Multiple schools across Michigan could face delays, early dismissals or closures Monday as forecasters warn of severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, hail, tornadoes and flooding rain.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, much of southern Michigan is under a slight risk for severe weather Monday as a strong storm system moves across the Midwest.

SPC Day 2 Outlook

Detroit was specifically listed among the larger population centers included in the slight risk area.

Forecasters said thunderstorms developing across the Plains and Midwest Monday could spread eastward into Michigan later in the day and Monday night. The Storm Prediction Center warned that storms moving through Illinois, Indiana and Ohio may continue tracking into Lower Michigan with the potential for damaging winds and isolated large hail.

Meteorologists also warned that heavy rainfall and repeated rounds of storms could lead to localized flooding and dangerous travel conditions. Strong wind gusts may bring down trees and power lines, increasing the risk of widespread power outages.

Those impacts could force some Michigan school districts to cancel classes, delay openings or dismiss students early if roads become hazardous or if schools lose power or sustain storm damage.

The Storm Prediction Center said atmospheric conditions across the region will support strong to severe thunderstorms as warm, moisture-rich air moves northward ahead of the approaching cold front.

School officials across Michigan are expected to continue monitoring updated forecasts and any watches or warnings issued by the National Weather Service through Monday morning.
