ILLINOIS — A widespread freeze warning is in effect across much of Illinois overnight into Monday morning, raising concerns about icy roads, possible light snow showers and the potential for school delays or closures on April 20.

According to the National Weather Service, sub-freezing temperatures as low as 27 to 30 degrees are expected across central, northern and northeastern Illinois. Areas impacted include major population centers such as Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, Champaign-Urbana, Springfield, Rockford, Aurora, Naperville and Chicago’s surrounding suburbs.

The freeze warning is in effect from around midnight to as late as 9 a.m. Monday in northern Illinois, and from approximately 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. across central portions of the state.

Forecasters warn that any moisture left on roadways from recent rain could freeze overnight, particularly on bridges, overpasses and untreated roads. This could create slick and hazardous travel conditions during the Monday morning commute.

In addition to freezing conditions, some areas of northern and central Illinois could see isolated light snow showers or flurries overnight into early Monday. While little to no accumulation is expected, even brief snow could reduce visibility and contribute to icy patches on roads.

The combination of freezing temperatures and potentially slick roadways may prompt some school districts, especially in rural areas and suburbs, to consider delays or closures Monday morning.

Officials also warn that frost and freezing conditions could damage crops, sensitive vegetation and exposed outdoor plumbing.

Residents are urged to take precautions, including protecting plants, covering outdoor pipes and allowing extra travel time during the morning commute.
