Measurable snowfall possible in Maryland this weekend

MARYLAND — A late-season weather system could bring a chance of measurable snowfall to parts of western Maryland this weekend into early next week, according to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh.

Forecast data indicates that snow is possible between Saturday afternoon and early Tuesday morning, with the best chances focused in the higher elevations of western Maryland.

While much of the state is expected to see only rain or no precipitation at all, areas along the Allegheny Mountains — including Garrett County and portions of Allegany County — could see light snow accumulations.

The official forecast shows most locations in western Maryland receiving little to no accumulation, but some higher-elevation areas could pick up around a half-inch of snow. The greatest chance for measurable snowfall appears near Oakland and along the ridgelines, where slightly colder temperatures could allow snow to briefly stick, especially during overnight hours.

A secondary outlook from the National Weather Service suggests there is about a 10% chance that some localized areas could see higher totals. In that scenario, snowfall could approach or slightly exceed 1 inch in the highest elevations.

Elsewhere across Maryland, including central and eastern portions of the state, temperatures are expected to remain too warm for snow, with precipitation falling mainly as rain if it occurs.

Forecasters note that any snow that does fall in western Maryland is expected to be minor and short-lived, with warm ground temperatures limiting accumulation on roadways. Most impacts, if any, would be confined to grassy or elevated surfaces.

While measurable snowfall is possible in parts of the region, meteorologists emphasize that this is a low-impact, late-season event.
