FLORIDA — Franklin County deputies are investigating the death of an infant after authorities received a distress call Thursday night involving a boat in the Gulf near “the Cut.”
According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, dispatchers received the call shortly after 8 p.m. about an infant aboard a vessel about a mile from the area known as “the Cut.”
Sheriff A.J. Smith said the infant’s parents were towing another boat from Clearwater to Apalachicola when the incident occurred. Investigators were told the mother gave birth aboard the boat shortly after noon Thursday.
Paramedics responded and treated both the mother and the infant. Authorities said the mother was OK, but the infant later died.
The investigation remains ongoing, and an autopsy is scheduled for next week. No names have been released.
