Indiana track meet canceled following fight between students

INDIANA — A track meet at Avon Middle School North was called off Wednesday evening after a fight between students led to police intervention, according to school officials.

In a letter sent to parents of track and field participants, Principal Mike McKinney said two students became involved in a “physical altercation” during the meet. McKinney said a parent who arrived at the scene then “escalated the situation,” prompting officers to respond.

An Avon Schools Police Department officer who was already working the event responded to the disturbance and requested assistance from the Avon Police Department.

“Due to the disruption and in the interest of student and spectator safety, we canceled the remainder of the meet,” McKinney said in the message.

Police officers who responded helped clear the area so students, families and spectators could leave safely.

McKinney said school and district administrators will continue to investigate the incident and that “appropriate disciplinary actions” will be taken against those involved.

“The safety and well-being of our students, families, and staff is our highest priority,” McKinney said. “We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we work to maintain a safe and respectful environment during school and at all school-sponsored activities.”

The incident happened Wednesday evening at Avon Middle School North in Hendricks County. No injuries were reported.
