GEORGIA — Schools in Harris County will open two hours late Thursday due to the threat of severe weather moving through the area.
According to the Harris County School District, all schools in the district will begin classes two hours later than normal as strong thunderstorms are expected overnight into Thursday morning.
District officials said bus routes, school openings and start times will all be delayed by two hours. For example, a bus normally scheduled to pick up students at 7 a.m. will instead arrive at approximately 9 a.m.
The delay comes as the National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch through Thursday morning for the area.
Forecasters warned of several potential hazards, including damaging winds up to 60 mph, heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding, isolated hail up to the size of quarters and the possibility of a few tornadoes. Officials also noted that a strong tornado cannot be ruled out.
School officials said breakfast will not be served because of the delayed opening. Lunch will still be provided at regularly scheduled times, and afternoon dismissal procedures will remain unchanged.
The district encouraged families to monitor local weather conditions and stay alert for any additional schedule changes or emergency updates.
