KANSAS — Five people were killed in a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon in southwest Kansas, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 1:20 p.m. on Highway 156 near milepost 64.

Authorities said the collision involved a 2023 Ford Ranger and a 2025 Dodge Dakota. According to Trooper Anthony Calderon, four of the five people inside the Dodge Dakota were killed in the crash, while another occupant was flown to Wichita with critical injuries.

The driver of the Ford Ranger, who was the only person in that vehicle, also died in the crash.

Officials said they are in the process of notifying next of kin, and the identities of those involved have not yet been released.

The highway was closed between U.S. 283 near Jetmore and U.S. 183 following the crash and was expected to remain shut down for several hours.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
