Dangerous heat wave could impact Ohio this week

OHIO — Forecasters are warning that a significant heat wave could bring dangerous temperatures to Ohio and much of the eastern United States during the middle of June.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, above-normal temperatures are expected across the entire lower 48 states from June 11 through June 17. Weather experts say a strong ridge of high pressure developing over much of the country is expected to drive the warming trend.

The National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center said the building ridge will promote above-average temperatures across the East Coast and parts of the Ohio Valley. Forecasters warn that warm overnight temperatures could increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for people without access to adequate cooling.

Meteorologists say temperatures across Ohio are expected to trend above seasonal averages as the pattern strengthens. The combination of high June sun angles, increasing humidity and ongoing dry conditions in some areas could further enhance heat impacts.

A ridge of high pressure occurs when air sinks and warms in the atmosphere, often leading to clear skies, limited rainfall and prolonged periods of hot weather. Such weather patterns are commonly associated with major summer heat waves.

Forecasters say the warm pattern is expected to persist through at least mid-June, although exact temperatures will vary across the state.

Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, check on vulnerable neighbors and ensure children and pets are never left inside vehicles. Those without reliable air conditioning are urged to seek cooling centers or other air-conditioned locations if temperatures become dangerous.
