Dangerous heat could impact Virginia this week

VIRGINIA — Forecasters are warning that a potentially dangerous heat wave could bring above-normal temperatures and increased heat risks to Virginia during the middle of June.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, above-normal temperatures are expected across the entire lower 48 states from June 11 through June 17. Virginia is among the areas forecast to experience sustained warmth as a large ridge of high pressure builds across much of the country.

The National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center said the developing weather pattern will promote above-average temperatures across the East Coast and Mid-Atlantic region. Forecasters are particularly concerned about warm overnight temperatures, which can limit relief from daytime heat and increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Meteorologists say Virginia could experience temperatures well above seasonal averages as the heat wave strengthens. Combined with increasing humidity levels common in June, heat index values may climb to dangerous levels in some locations.

Weather experts note that a ridge of high pressure typically creates clear skies, limited rainfall and prolonged periods of hot weather. Such patterns are often responsible for some of the most significant summer heat waves.

The warm pattern is expected to persist through at least mid-June, with forecasters indicating that portions of the eastern United States could see an extended stretch of above-normal temperatures.

Officials encourage Virginians to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, wear lightweight clothing and check on elderly relatives, neighbors and others who may be vulnerable to extreme heat. Residents are also reminded never to leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
