MICHIGAN — A bicyclist died after being struck by a vehicle Monday night in Allegan County, according to Michigan State Police.
The crash occurred around 10:30 p.m. on 129th Avenue near 10th Street in Wayland Township. Police said a 65-year-old Wayland man was riding a bicycle westbound when he was hit by a vehicle.
The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle was not injured.
Michigan State Police are reminding motorists to be aware of bicyclists and to provide them with adequate space while sharing the road.
“MSP reminds the public that bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motor vehicle operators on Michigan roadways,” the agency said in a statement. “State law requires drivers to provide at least 3 feet of space when passing bicyclists. Riders are encouraged to wear helmets and bright or reflective clothing to improve visibility, especially at night.”
The crash remains under investigation.
