
OHIO — A wrong-way driver was killed Friday night after crashing head-on into a marked Ohio State Highway Patrol cruiser on State Route 2 in Lake County.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash happened just before 9 p.m. on westbound State Route 2 near State Route 44 in Painesville Township.
Investigators said a trooper was traveling west in a marked patrol vehicle when a brown 2011 Toyota Scion, which was traveling east in the westbound lanes, collided head-on with the cruiser. Following the impact, the Scion caught fire.
The driver of the Scion, identified as 61-year-old Jerry Alberico of Mentor, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
The trooper suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to University Hospitals TriPoint Medical Center in Concord Township for treatment.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
