Severe thunderstorms possible in Illinois Tuesday

ILLINOIS — Parts of Illinois could experience strong to severe thunderstorms Tuesday as a cold front moves across the Midwest, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

Much of the state is included in a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather, with the potential for isolated severe storms developing during the afternoon and evening hours.

SPC Day 2 Outlook

Forecasters say increasing moisture ahead of the approaching cold front will help fuel thunderstorm development across the region. Some storms may develop earlier in the day, with a few capable of producing isolated damaging wind gusts due to strengthening winds and unstable atmospheric conditions.

The primary severe weather threat is expected later in the afternoon and evening as storms form along the cold front. Conditions may support strong to severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail and an isolated tornado.

Cloud cover from earlier storms could limit the overall intensity of the severe weather threat, but forecasters say enough instability should remain in place for some storms to become severe.

The Storm Prediction Center is continuing to monitor the situation and may adjust risk levels in future forecasts if conditions become more favorable for stronger storms.

Illinois residents are encouraged to stay weather aware Tuesday and keep track of the latest forecasts and any watches or warnings that may be issued.
